Releasing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Epic Game Store last year, The Outer Worlds was one of 2019's biggest RPGs. Acting as something of a spiritual successor to Obsidian Entertainment's work on Fallout: New Vegas, it was a sci-fi experience that put the reins of the story in the hands of the player, letting them create a wholly unique character and make choices that affected the outcome of the story and world.

Valve confirmed that The Outer Worlds is coming to Steam in 2020, with the full date being October 23, nearly exactly a year after the game’s original release. As for when you get there, you can. The first thing you’ll want to do is launch The Outer Worlds on Steam in Online mode (launching the game in Offline mode populates a separate folder, which is what “LOCAL” is for) once so that the game creates and populates the relevant foldersif you haven’t done so already. Step 2 After that’s done, go into this folder.

It was notably absent from one platform, however, with Obsidian's decision to partner with Epic Games meaning The Outer Worldsskipped a release on Steam during its first year. With the anniversary of the quirky RPG inching closer by the day, it seems the game is finally making its way to the seminal PC storefront, officially debuting on October 23.

With the game's exclusivity to the Epic Games Store causing controversy when it was announced last year, there's likely still some players holding out for its release on Valve's digital storefront. Unfortunately, there's very little additional information for these players about the upcoming port, with Steam not giving a firm price point or revealing whether the game's newest DLC, Peril on Gorgon, will be available for purchase on day one.

For those who didn't catch the debut of The Outer Worlds last year, the game centers around a fictional colony of planets dominated by megacorporations that force civilians to live under consistent propaganda and advertisements. The player takes on the role of a colonist who awakens from cryosleep and must undertake a perilous, planet-hopping journey to save the galaxy. As expected for Obsidian, the release was acclaimed for its sharp sense of humor and how liberally it gave players agency in the story. They could kill every character in the game, achieve multiple different endings, and even side with the antagonists if they chose to.

It managed to garner an 85 on Metacritic at release, with critics agreeing that Obsidian had managed to build on the winning formula that made the team's work on Fallout: New Vegas so unbelievably special. Recently, the team followed the game up with Peril on Gorgon, a substantial slice of new content that took players to a new location with fresh enemies to face and quests to complete. It was largely received well, with fans merely wanting more of The Outer Worlds' characters and tongue-in-cheek writing.

The Outer Worlds will make its way to Steam on October 23.
